Echovirus-1

The echo viruses are another group of enteroviruses. ECHO stands for ‘enteric cytopathic human orphan’. The term orphan was used because when they were first discovered, they were not linked to any human disease.

The echovirus being developed by Viralytics is echovirus 1 (EV1). Infections caused by echovirus 1 usually cause no symptoms, but sometimes can cause a mild respiratory infection.

Studies have shown that echovirus 1 binds to a specific cell receptor called the integrin alpha 2 beta 1 receptor. This receptor is found in high amounts in ovarian cancer cells.

Studies in SCID mice (mice without a normal immune system) have confirmed the killing effect of echovirus 1 on ovarian cancer cells. In one experiment, mice had human ovarian cancer cells injected into the peritoneal cavity. Ovarian cancer commonly spreads into the peritoneal cavity, where it causes an accumulation of fluid called ascites. Mice that then received an injection of echovirus 1 into the peritoneal cavity did not develop ascites, while those in the group that did not receive echovirus 1 developed considerable amounts of ascites.

These studies show that there is good potential for echovirus 1 to be used for the treatment of ovarian cancer in humans.
